Colorado Youth for Unity and Equality started with four friends who were disheartened by the election results in November 2006. Referendum I and Amendment 43 that changed Colorado law to represent an anti-GLBT society. Basic rights to protect a partnership were denied and marriage defined as one man and one woman.
We believe that regardless of individual identity, no person should be denied the right to have their love denied while others are recognized.
We decided that the GLBT community needed to be more visible to demonstrate that equal rights are deserved as a basic human right. Especially the youth community because it is our future that is being denied, and we need to have our voices heard.
We planned a protest to show our unity and youth and our need for equality through visibility.
As we organized, it soon became clear that there was a need for a youth movement because youth are so often overlooked, especially GLBT-identifying youth. With amazing support from Soulforce Colorado and Soulforce National, we began developing a way to unify the youth of the GLBT community into one voice.
